Acoustic and Fire-Rated Doors for Northgate Yard Cinema

Tight deadlines, complex installations, custom designs and tight regulations

Project overview

In January 2022, Wilmott Dixon approached QuietStar to supply and install 25 custom acoustic-rated doors for Northgate Cinema, a newly developed cinema complex within a retail park in Bridgewater. These doors needed to meet rigorous standards for security, acoustics, and fire safety to support the cinema’s multi-screen layout and ensure compliance with UK building regulations.

After a thorough specification and pricing negotiation, QuietStar received the order on February 10, 2022. Our team fast-tracked the design phase, achieving architectural and consultant approval by early April, and completed manufacturing within six weeks, ahead of the standard 8-10 week timeline. The installation was completed by early June 2022, with a dedicated team of four staff on-site five days a week.

The Brief

Wilmott Dixon needed an experienced partner to deliver custom, high-spec acoustic doors within a compressed timeline for Northgate Cinema’s multi-screen configuration. QuietStar was tasked with ensuring the doors met all necessary security and fire safety ratings, adhering strictly to both project design and regulatory requirements. In addition, QuietStar coordinated with architects and consultants to ensure compliance and precision, managing design modifications to match the structure’s layout.

Our Approach

QuietStar’s approach focused on maintaining clear communication with project stakeholders while ensuring each door met specific regulatory and acoustic standards. Our team selected Quiet Lock 43 and 47 acoustic steel doors, customising them to include RC3 security ratings and 30- to 60-minute fire ratings. Design adjustments were made to achieve compliance with BS EN 1125 standards for emergency exits, including the necessary 850mm clear opening for accessibility.

To overcome structural constraints posed by pre-existing openings, our team calculated adjustments in door placement and frame design, achieving the required clearances without altering the building’s structure. The installation process was meticulously managed, with a team dedicated to on-site efficiency, quality control, and a minimal snagging period.

The Results

The project outcomes included a significant improvement in sound insulation and security within the cinema environment, aligning with QuietStar’s standards of quality and precision. The installed doors achieved the required acoustic and security ratings, creating a comfortable, secure setting for cinema-goers while meeting stringent building codes.

QuietStar’s streamlined approach enabled us to deliver the project within a condensed timeline, ensuring that Northgate Cinema’s overall project schedule remained on track.
