Project overview
In collaboration with Octopus Energy, QuietStar designed, supplied, and commissioned a bespoke semi-anechoic chamber within an active warehouse. This state-of-the-art facility included an isolated acoustic enclosure, foam wedges, acoustic-rated single and double doors, advanced electrical installations, an external acoustic stud “tea cosy” enclosure, terminal ductwork, and silencers. Designed to support critical R&D efforts in developing quieter and smaller heat pumps, the facility enables Octopus Energy to align with government net-zero emission targets.
The installation was completed successfully, achieving and surpassing rigorous acoustic performance benchmarks.
The Brief
Octopus Energy required an acoustic testing environment within their warehouse-based R&D facility, designed specifically for developing innovative, quieter, and smaller heat pumps. The facility needed precise acoustic control despite significant ambient noise levels from warehouse activities, as it also housed two demonstration houses used for staff training.
QuietStar was selected to deliver a high-specification acoustic solution, providing detailed design and coordination to ensure compliance with stringent acoustic and regulatory requirements.
Our Approach
QuietStar implemented a custom “room within a room” acoustic solution featuring an isolated inner enclosure. Special attention was given to the integration of foam wedges for maximum acoustic absorption, precision electrical installations, and dedicated acoustic-rated door systems.
Throughout the installation, QuietStar coordinated closely with third-party contractors, managing some unexpected challenges in stride. Even when facing a last-minute design adjustment by the building contractor (the omission of an external wall), the QuietStar team rapidly adapted, ensuring timely completion without compromising acoustic performance.
The installation was carefully managed with dedicated project personnel, ensuring meticulous adherence to quality standards and minimal operational disruption.
The Results
The success of this project has provided Octopus Energy with an optimal environment for their critical product development and testing, significantly enhancing their capability to innovate towards quieter, smaller, and more efficient heat pump solutions.
The completed semi-anechoic chamber surpassed the initial acoustic performance targets:
