A Single Doorset Can Deliver Acoustic, Fire, Smoke, and Security Performance

On paper, the modern commercial doorset has a lot to do. It needs to hold back fire and smoke, resist forced entry, control sound transmission, and often meet thermal or weather-tightness targets as well. And yet many specifications still treat these as separate problems with different doors, from different suppliers, for different rooms.

In 2026, a single certified doorset can deliver all of the above, tested and documented as one complete assembly. Here’s why that matters.

Why Multi-Performance Doorsets Have Become the Standard

The specification bar for commercial doors has risen sharply in recent years. The Building Safety Act 2022, subsequent revisions to Approved Document B, and the establishment of the Building Safety Regulator represent the most significant reform of building safety legislation in a generation, placing far greater accountability on architects, contractors, and building owners to specify products that are tested, certified, and demonstrably fit for purpose.

At the same time, buildings themselves have become more demanding. Mixed-use developments combine residential, commercial, and hospitality functions within a single envelope. Healthcare and education buildings routinely require rooms that are simultaneously acoustically private, fire-compartmented, and access-controlled. Data centres, laboratories, and defence facilities layer security requirements on top of everything else.

The result is that a doorset can no longer be a single-purpose object. It needs to perform several roles at once and be certified to do so.

The Four Performance Layers

Most high-specification commercial doorsets today are being asked to combine four core performance layers. Each has its own testing standard and certification pathway.

Acoustic performance

Rated in decibels (Rw at the door, R’w once installed). Depends on leaf construction, seal detailing, threshold treatment, and the surrounding wall build-up. A door rated to Rw 42dB will typically deliver R’w 37dB or better in a well-detailed installation.

Fire integrity and insulation

Rated in minutes (E for integrity, EI for integrity plus insulation). Tested to BS EN 1634-1. Fire-rated doorsets from 30 to 60 minutes cover the majority of commercial applications, with higher ratings available for specialised uses.

Smoke control

Tested to BS EN 1634-3, with classifications such as C5Sa (ambient smoke) and C5S200 (medium-temperature smoke). Smoke leakage is a distinct performance requirement from fire integrity and is now scrutinised much more closely for protected escape routes, stair cores, and lobbies.

Security rating

Rated under BS EN 1627 (RC1 to RC6) or LPS1175 (SR1 to SR8) depending on the certification pathway. Reflects how the doorset performs under forced-entry attack conditions. RC3 provides a robust commercial baseline; higher ratings are used for high-value, sensitive, or high-risk areas.

Combining Them Is an Engineering Challenge

It’s tempting to assume that a door which achieves each of these ratings individually will achieve all of them together. In practice, the combination is where the engineering happens.

Acoustic seals need to compress consistently to maintain both sound insulation and smoke control. Security hardware must be compatible with fire-rated ironmongery. Thresholds have to reconcile acoustic requirements with DDA-compliant access. Vision panels ,often needed for wayfinding or clinical observation, introduce their own testing implications for both fire and acoustic performance.

A doorset that has been designed, manufactured, and certified as a complete assembly to meet all four performance layers simultaneously is a materially different product from one built from components that each pass a single test. The documentation architects and duty holders need at handover reflects this and legacy data sheets rarely stand up to modern scrutiny.
