From Brief to Build: How a QuietStar Acoustic Project Actually Works

At QuietStar, we believe that the way we work is as important as what we deliver. Every project follows a structured, collaborative approach. This article walks you through it, from the moment you get in touch to the day we hand over a completed, certified installation.

Why the process matters as much as the product

Acoustic performance is only ever as good as the system that delivers it. The highest-rated acoustic door in our range will underperform if it’s incorrectly specified, poorly installed, or fitted without proper consideration of how it interacts with the surrounding structure. The same is true of anechoic chambers, audiology rooms and industrial noise control solutions. This is why QuietStar takes a design-and-build approach to every project.

Step 1: Initial Enquiry and Site Survey

When you contact QuietStar, you’ll speak directly with a specialist. We take time to understand the challenge you’re facing and the environment you’re working in to deliver a successful outcome for your organisation.

Where the project warrants it, we’ll arrange a site visit. This is a critical step that many suppliers overlook. The site survey allows us to:

  • Assess the acoustic environment and identify flanking paths or structural challenges
  • Understand any access or operational constraints
  • Take accurate measurements and gather information that will inform the specification
  • Build a clear picture of what’s required before any design work begins

We also work closely with any other parties on the project – contractors, architects, acoustic consultants, estates teams – from the outset.

Step 2: Acoustic Design and Specification

Once we have a thorough understanding of your requirements, our team develops the acoustic design and specification. This is where our depth of expertise comes into its own.

For a complex project such as a new audiology facility or anechoic test chamber, this stage involves detailed acoustic modelling, careful selection of materials and construction methods and close attention to the relevant standards.

For acoustic testing facilities in particular, the design process also accounts for practical challenges that aren’t always apparent. When we relocated and rebuilt an anechoic chamber for RACAL Acoustics (now INVISIO), the new building had a significantly lower ceiling height than the original and the original design drawings no longer existed. Our team worked from on-site measurements, engineering the required modifications while maintaining the chamber’s acoustic performance.

At this stage, we will provide:

  • A clear specification covering materials, construction methods and expected acoustic performance
  • Relevant product data and test certification where applicable
  • A project timeline and programme
  • Transparent pricing with no hidden costs

Step 3: Manufacture and Quality Control

A significant proportion of what QuietStar installs is manufactured specifically for each project. Our acoustic steel doors, for instance, are engineered to meet the exact performance requirements of the application – whether that’s a 56dB acoustic rating for a music practice room or recording studio, a fire resistance up to 240 minutes for a plant or generator room housing specialist equipment, or security certification up to LPS 1175 SR4 for highly secure buildings or sites. All door products will come with the relevant and in date certification to cover each level of performance criteria

The same applies to all our other acoustic solutions. Each element is manufactured and quality-checked before it arrives on site, reducing the risk of delays and ensuring installation runs smoothly.

For larger projects, components are staged and programmed to arrive in line with the installation sequence, minimising disruption to your facility – a particular priority when working within operational environments such as hospitals or manufacturing sites.

Step 4: Installation and Project Management

Our installation teams are experienced specialists. They understand the acoustic principles behind what they’re installing, which means workmanship quality is consistently high and details are not overlooked. This matters because acoustic performance is frequently determined by the quality of the installation.

Throughout the installation phase, QuietStar manages the project actively. We handle unforeseen site issues as they arise and keep you informed at every stage. When buried infrastructure was discovered mid-project at Lister Hospital, creating unexpected complications during the demolition phase, the team adapted quickly, completing the project on time and within the NHS capital funding deadline.

We also operate with a clear understanding of the environments we work in. Infection control in a clinical setting, noise and dust management in an operational factory, or the security requirements of a defence research facility – these are integral parts of how we plan and execute the installation.

Step 5: Testing, Sign-Off and Aftercare

A QuietStar project is not complete until performance has been independently verified. For audiology facilities, this means calibration testing against ISO and British Society of Audiology (BSA) standards. For acoustic test chambers, it means background noise level measurement, insertion loss verification and reverberation time testing. For acoustic doors and glazed screens, it means confirming that installed performance meets the specified rating.

We provide full documentation at handover, including test results, certification and any relevant product data. This gives you the evidence you need to demonstrate compliance.

Beyond handover, we remain available and offer ongoing service support to ensure your product remains functional well beyond its initial installation. Our clients continue to work with us on subsequent projects because they trust that if something needs attention, we’ll be there.
